Mars is our nearest neighbor in the solar system, often called the Red Planet by ancient civilizations. It has been the most attractive destination for human space exploration because it provides a natural laboratory for studying planetary sciences. NASA JPL has deployed several robots to investigate the Red Planet, including five rovers, two landers and a helicopter over the last few decades. These exploration missions have revealed that Mars once had a warm and wet climate that could have supported life.
The Perseverance rover and Ingenuity Mars Helicopter are two NASA missions that are exploring the Red Planet. The Perseverance rover is searching for signs of ancient life and collecting rock samples for future return to Earth. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter is a technology demonstration to test powered, controlled flight on another world for the first time. In this talk, I will narrate the experience of roaming the Martian surface from the perspective of the robotic vehicles and share the significant scientific discoveries from the data collected by these human proxies.
